The Temple
Hare Krishna Temple – Montreal
The Hare Krishna Temple of Montreal is a spiritual and cultural landmark, serving as a center for Bhakti Yoga, meditation, and community service. Originally built as an Anglican church, the temple was acquired in 1975 by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and has since become a hub for spiritual seekers, students of Vedic philosophy, and travelers from around the world.
A Temple with a Rich History
Montreal holds a special place in the history of the Hare Krishna movement. In 1968, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, the founder of ISKCON, personally visited the city to establish the early Krishna Consciousness community. This temple continues to uphold his vision by providing a sacred space for devotion, learning, and service.
Over the years, the temple has welcomed renowned Swamis and spiritual teachers, including:
-
Bhaktimarga Swami – A Canadian monk known for his cross-country "Walking Monk" pilgrimages.
-
Radhanath Swami – A world-renowned speaker and author of The Journey Home.
-
Giriraj Swami – One of Prabhupāda’s early disciples, instrumental in ISKCON’s growth.
-
Jayadvaita Swami – A scholar and editor of many of ISKCON’s core texts.
Daily Spiritual Activities
The temple follows a traditional Vaishnava schedule, which includes:
🕕 Morning Meditations & Kirtans – Vibrational mantra chanting to cultivate inner peace.
📖 Srimad-Bhagavatam Classes – Scriptural discussions on life’s deepest questions.
🕉 Arati Ceremonies – Ritual offerings to the Deities of Sri Sri Radha-Manohara, the temple’s presiding deities.
A Gathering Place for All
Visitors are welcome to participate in daily activities or simply enjoy the temple’s peaceful atmosphere. Every Sunday, the temple hosts the Sunday Love Feast, a tradition started by Srila Prabhupāda himself, offering a free vegetarian feast, kirtan, and discussions on Bhakti Yoga.
Additionally, the temple organizes monthly kirtans in downtown Montreal, as well as philosophical discussions and meditation sessions through the Espace Bhakti initiative.
A Living Spiritual Legacy
Whether you are looking for meditation, meaningful discussions, or simply a space to reflect, the Hare Krishna Temple of Montreal is a place of discovery, devotion, and community.
